Life at Windian High (Part 2)

It had been a good night.

It had been a great night.

It had been an all out wonderful night.

Diane was stretched out with Chris, the two worens cuddled happily together in the grass as they stared up at the sky, watching the stars twinkle brightly overhead. Before that, Diane had gotten to eat some of the most wonderful roast she had ever had in her entire life. Yes, tonight was a wonderful night. Too bad I gotta spoil the mood.

Even though it had been a wonderful night, it had been a slightly unsettling day. Earlier that day, over at the Reverse Edge, Frank and Chris had been acting rather suspicious about something, and Diane wanted to know what. But it wasn't just curiousity that had her trying to pry into what was going on with Chris and Frank. I mean, c'mon... they're my co-workers... they're my friends! What are they tryin' ta keep from me...? In all honesty, the woren couldn't help but feel a little rejected by the secrecy that was now hovering around Frank and Chris. And that was the driving force that was making her want to know all about it.

"Hey Diane," Chris looked over at his girlfriend. He could tell there was something uneasy about her, with the way her tail was suddenly twitching. "You alright?"

Lesse... how to pry this out of him though? Direct question? Nah, he'd prolly avoid that. Lesse... my own boyfriend, trying to keep something from me.... I guess the only thing really suitable right now would be the ol' guilt card. "Nah..." Diane heaved a thoughtful sigh and stared up at the stars. "I'm fine... really..."

Chris gave her a concerned look but turned his gaze back up to the stars.

The guilt card, something that chicks often enjoy using in order to worm information out of their friends or significant others. This move often works best when the subject you want to worm information out of it male. It works really really well, if you happen to be going out with said male. And it works really really really well, when said male, whom you are dating, is holding back information in such a way that is justified in the mind of a chick as a type of rejection. Overall, the setup was perfect for Diane. The woren batted an ear and made her move.

"Chris... ya know... I'd never keep anythin' from ya, never keep any secrets or anythin', ya know that?"

Uh oh. Warning alarms began to flash and sound in Chris' mind. He wasn't sure what, but he knew that something was up with his girlfriend. "Uh... yea?" His answer came out as an uneasy reply as he turned to Diane.

Diane rolled over in order to achieve eye-contact with her boyfriend. "No secrets, right? I mean, if ya wanted to know somethin' tha' I knew, I wouldn' hide it from ya. I'd tell ya... yer my boyfriend.. ya may as well be my best friend, so, if I couldn' tell you, who could I tell?"

Oh Landon, I think I can guess what this is about. Chris batted an ear uneasily as he stared into Diane's vivid green eyes. They had a sense of innocent trust in them, and at once Chris knew exactly what Diane was poking at. The weapon Frank and I are making... He thought about when he had asked him about what he and Frank had been doing in the R&D room. He had told her 'nothing.' Landon, of course she wasn't going to believe that... Chris continued to stare into her wide and trusting eyes, and he felt a tinge of guilt begin to start in the back of his mind. Those eyes, those innocent and trusting eyes, he had lied to them earlier, Diane had asked, and he had refused to tell her. Chris' tail began to flick uneasily as Diane let out a sigh and turned to stare up at the stars.

"It's nice ta have someone I can trust like that... someone tha' I can talk ta, and who will treat me with tha same openess, ya know? No secrets..."

Chris let out a pained whimper. "Diane..."

"I mean," the woren continued like she didn't even hear him. "Yer my boyfriend! We shouldn' be keepin' anythin' from each other anyway! If I can' trust ya, who can I trust? Who else can I-"

"Alright alright alright!" Chris sat up, his tail lashing desperately. "Frank had an idea on a new type of crossbow, and he wants my help to work on it!" The explination came out in a sudden burst of words and it took Diane a minute to reply Chris' message at a slow enough speed in her mind so that she could understand it. When she was finally able to catch what he had said, the look in her eyes was replaced by one of honest hurt and her ears and tail fell sadly.

"Ya'll were hidin' tha' from me? Landon! I'm yer co-worker! I'm yer friend! I'm yer GIRLFRIEND for Landon's sake! Why... why were ya tryin' ta hide tha' from me? Ya know I'd love ta help..."

"Yea.. but..." Chris let out an uneasy sigh as he ran his fingers through his hair nervously. Diane's look had become much more painful now that she wasn't just playing around. Chris could tell that it was honest hurt that was showing in her face. Hurt from being kept out of something like this. Rejection... Chris let out a quiet whimper before trying to reply to his girlfriend. "Frank..... didn't want to tell you... since you had messed with his Western Custom and all..."

"Oh I see!" Diane shot up into a sitting position, her eyes flashing with anger and hurt as she crossed her arms over her chest. "You were afraid I was going to do something to wreck it weren't you?"

Chris stared in wonder for a moment. Landon.. her slur just.... vanished! The woren took a mental note, when Diane stops her slurring, she's mad. Chris shook his head before trying to reply again. "What? Yes! NO! I mean... Diane..." The woren let out a sigh. "Look, I'm really really really really really sorry... It's not that we don't trust you or anything..."

"No, of course it's not that!" Diane rolled her eyes and growled harshly. "That's exactly why my boyfriend and one of my good friends, both who happen to be my co-workers, are keeping something from me that they know I would have loved to help out in! Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that I'd probably just mess it up anyway!" The woren turned her back towards her boyfriend, glaring out across the pond that the two woren had been laying near, her tail lashing about angrily as her ears lay flat against the side of her head. Chris stared at the back of her head, his tail flicking about nervously as his ears drooped. It had been bad enough that earlier he had begun to feel a little guilty about keeping this from his girlfriend, but now it was getting steadily worse. After all, he had never meant to hurt her feelings.

"Diane..."

Diane did nothing to respond.

"Diane..." Chris let out a pianed sigh ad his tail waved. He could see the muscles on Diane's back tense as she suddenly whirled around.

"WHAT?!" The woren's fire-filled green eyes suddenly went wide as Chris caught her up in a kiss. They continued to stay wide as Chris pulled back and sighed, running his fingers through his hair.

"I... I don't want to lose you... I know..." The woren's tail was waving as nervously as Diane's had been all night, and perhaps even more so. "What we did was wrong... Landon... you don't know how much it's been bothering me... Frank as well... At work... he looked kind of... what's the word I'm looking for?" Chris just shook his head. "Anyway, Landon... Diane... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... look, it's nothing about you, nothing at all. I don't think your going to screw things up, or anything like that..."

Diane had finally slipped out of the shock from that sudden kiss, and once again her ears were drooping with hurt as she considered her boyfriend with sad eyes. "Then why didja do it?"

"Landon... I don't know... Diane, I don't know why..." Chris sighed. "It wasn't right, I admit that... and I really do feel bad about it, all day... Landon... Diane, I'm so so sorry... please, if you could just forgive me..." Chris' tail was just barely twitching as he gazed at Diane hopefully. The woren considered him for a moment.

He does seem really sorry... Landon, I don't wanna stay mad at him... "Chris..." Daine shook her head. "It's one thin' when someone is keepin' somethin' from ya... but it's somthin' else interely when tha' somone is you..." She turned and looked back out over the pond, her ears flicking lightly before she lowered her head and then turned back to the woren sitting beside her. "Ya know... maybe this was jus' somethin' little... I mean, it's jus' some weapon ya an' Frank are makin'... but... it's not that tha' bothers me... it's jus' tha'... you would try an' keep somethin' hidden from me..."

"Diane..." Chris shook his head. "I am so... so sorry... I will make this up to you, Landon, I swear it..."

"Chris..." Diane's tail flicked just lightly as she gazed up at her boyfriend, staring into his eyes. She could see the guilt and pain that was in them, and it made her stop suddenly. She hadn't really payed attention until now, she had been too busy being mad at him, but now she could really see how worried he was. And it hurt her to see the emotion in his eyes. Landon... "Chris... it's alright.. jus'..." The woren scooted closer to her boyfriend, taking a hold of his arms and wrapping them around herself. Chris took the hint and pulled her close in an embrace. "I jus' wanna know tha' I can trust you..."

"Of course you can..." Chris stroked Diane's hair caringly as he held her. "I'm your boyfriend... if you can't trust me, who can you trust?" Diane gazed up at him, and Chris managed a smile back down at her. Her only response was a kiss before she curled up in his arms and two went back to their star gazing, both of them feeling much better now in each others company.
