Out of Darkness

"I really wish you all wouldn't have brought those things in here with you." Robert's mother was eyeing the group's weapons suspiciously. "Things like those are so unsafe to have around the house..."
Brandon looked away from the picture he had been studying and turned to gaze at the woman, resting a hand lightly on the rapier hanging at his side. "Well, there's not really anywhere else we can put these things. They're going to have to stay with us."
Robert's mother was about to protest when Ray cut in calmly.
"Nothing will happen, ma'am. Besides, we don't plan on staying here for long... maybe just tonight."
"Oh?" The woman looked over at Ray in surprise. "You can cure him that quickly?"
Janet glanced up in confusion. "Cure? Wait, cure who?"
"Robert of course." The woman motioned to the stairway. "You're friend said she might be able to find a cure. She said she wouldn't leave until she helped... although, I doubt she'll be able to." The woman sighed, a look of sorrow passed over her face. "The doctors don't even know..." she began to shake her head as she spoke quietly to herself. Janet turned to the rest of the group, a look of annoyance in her face.
"I don't believe this..." she was trying to keep her voice quiet enough so that Robert's mom wouldn't hear her. "I know she likes kids, but this is ridiculous."
Jason just shrugged. "I don't see what you're complaining about. You said you wanted a place to stay at, right?"
"Yea, for the night!" Janet shot a quick glare at Jason, who immediately through his hands up in defense.
"Whoa! What the hell are you doing giving me that look? All I said was-"
"Shut up, Jason!" Janet turned to Ray and Brandon. "I'm going to find Lucy and figure out just what the hell she's doing." That said, Janet made her way past the three guys and out the front door.

It wasn't long before Janet caught sight of Lucy; the windian was pacing around a small fountain located in the center of the small town.
"What the hell are you telling that woman you can cure her kid for?" Janet stalked up to Lucy, waiting impatiently for an explanation. Lucy just gazed up at her with eyes that seemed to be clouded with thought.
"There's five children here in all that are sick..." Lucy didn't even seem to have heard Janet's question. She lowered her gaze again and continued pacing, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Janet was even standing there as Lucy moved past her.
Janet turned to watch her, curiosity and annoyance echoing through her eyes and voice. "What? Lucy? Did you even hear me?"
"Five children..." Lucy only continued to talk to herself, "two girls and three boys, all around Robert's age..." The windian began to 'hum' to herself as she continued pacing around thoughtfully.
"Hello... Torana to Lucy, are you there?" Janet walked up behind the windian and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hello? I'm trying to talk to you already..."
Lucy turned, looking up at Janet and blinking curiously. "Oh, Janet? How long have you been here?"
"Little Miss Oblivious!" Janet threw her hands up in annoyance. "I've been standing here for the past few minutes trying to get your attention!"
"Oh, well, you have it now." Lucy folded her hands in front of her and waited patiently for Janet to continue.
"What are you thinking? Telling that lady that you can help her kid?" Janet glanced in the direction of Robert's house. "I mean, I know you like kids, but saying you won't leave until you can help him? Come on, Lucy!"
Lucy tilted her head to the side, studying Janet with emotionless eyes. "Why? What's wrong with wanting to help?"
"Gee, I dunno, something about us being in a hurry? Demon, sea of trees, long journey west..." Janet watched Lucy for a moment. "Well?"
"Well what?" Lucy gave her a questioning look.
"Well, what are we going to do now? We've got to get going again tomorrow, but you've got that lady thinking we'll be here until her kid is better!"
Lucy shrugged. "So, then we'll just have to make her kid better."
Janet let out a loud groan of annoyance. "We can't wait! We're in a hurry!"
"Since when have you been so ready to head out again anyway?" Lucy crossed her arms and gave Janet a suspicious look. "You're the one who was complaining when we thought we couldn't stay here."
"Yea well, I guess I just don't want to stay in a town where some incurable fever is going around." Janet crossed her arms as well and gave Lucy a determined look. "Anyway, how are you supposed to be able to help that kid? You don't even know any healing spells..."
Lucy shrugged and lowered her arms to her side with a light sigh. "I don't know, something just seems odd about this. You know, only the kids seem to have the fever..."
"Yea, I heard you rambling about that when I first got here..." Janet rubbed the side of her head. "Look, I guess I already know I can't make you change your mind once you've got it stuck on something..." Janet shrugged her shoulders lightly in defeat. "But do you have any idea what you're doing?"
"I might." Lucy was slowly working her way back into a pace around the fountain. "I want to wait a while and see though. Maybe see if anyone else gets sick, or see what happens to the kids."
"I don't think that dragon and Brandon are going to be too happy about us wasting time here like this you know." Janet crossed her arms again and was watching Lucy pace.
"Oh? Well then, they can go on ahead without me."
Janet raised an eyebrow at her friend. "I guess you really are determined to help that kid, huh?" Lucy nodded in reply and Janet let out another sigh. "Fine, look, I'm going back to the house okay? I don't exactly trust leaving Jason alone in some strangers house with only Brandon and that damn dragon there to watch him." Janet turned and began to make her way back to Robert's house, leaving Lucy to pace around the fountain. Janet had only gone a few steps when Lucy's voice caught her attention again.
"Oh Janet."
Janet turned around and glanced back at where her friend was standing, watching her leave. "Yea?"
"That damn dragon's name is Ray." Lucy offered Janet a small smile before she began her pacing again.
Janet sighed loudly and muttered under her breath, "yea, sure, Ray..." Then she turned once more from her pacing friend and headed back to Robert's house.
