Out of Darkness

"Did you five sleep okay? You all look a bit tired." Mrs. Anderson was setting up the table for breakfast for the small group as they groggily made their way into the kitchen.
"Just had a hard time getting to sleep." Janet yawned.
"How's Robert doing?" Lucy asked Mrs. Anderson questioningly as she sat down in the chair that Ray had pulled out for her. Ray then took a seat on Lucy's left, and Brandon sat down on her right. Janet and Jason sat down in chairs as far away from each other as they could get, which happened to be right across the table from each other anyway so they ended up keeping their gazes down through most of the breakfast, refusing to look at each other. Lucy sighed to herself. Will those two ever get along?
"Not good I'm afraid." Mrs. Anderson sighed as she pulled out a few glasses for the group. "He's got a bad chill this morning, and he's even paler now then he was yesterday." Mrs. Anderson paused for a moment. "Do you really think you'll be able to help him?" She turned to Lucy, a hopeful yet doubtful look resting in her eyes. Lucy studied her for a moment before replying.
"I think I will... hopefully I can."
Mrs. Anderson nodded and quickly changed the subject. "So, who wants orange juice and who wants milk? Anyone here want water?"

After breakfast the group was gathered out near the fountain in the center of town again.
"So, should we start looking for where these shens might be hiding out at or what?" Jason leaned up against the side of the fountain casually. Lucy shrugged.
"I don't know. It'll be hard... the shens could be walking around like normal people right now." She glanced around at a few of the villagers as they passed by. "There's no way to really tell where they've located themselves until you find where they've left the rest of themselves when they've gone out at night."
"Well, we can at least get a few ideas." Brandon glanced around the town curiously. "Find some of the most likely spots. Maybe pick up on a bit of information about anything strange the villagers have noticed going on."
"Oh yea! Great idea!" Jason offered Brandon an overly enthusiastic grin. "Why don't we just go door to door? Knock, knock. Hello? You wouldn't happen to have any demons living in your house? You know, the kind that like to leave their legs behind at night and go around praying on little kids?"
"Jason just shut the hell up already!" Janet turned and glared at him. "I've really had it with your attitude!"
"Like that's supposed to surprise me?" Jason raised his eyebrow at Janet. "When have you not been annoyed at me anyway? Aren't I the guy who can open his mouth and immediately do something wrong?"
"Like now?" Janet placed her hands on her hips and gave Jason a challenging look. He matched the look with one of his own.
"Oh, like you've been an angel during this whole trip anyway! You didn't even take the stupid thing seriously until last night!"
"Yea? Well at least I had a good reason for coming here!" Janet pointed to Lucy. "I'm here to help her out! What the hell are you here for anyway?"
Jason looked startled for a moment, the question catching him off guard. "Me?"
"Yes! You! You can't stand to do anything with that dragon except to use him as a punching bag! And now, here you are, running around fighting demons with him! Why? What drove you to put up with this guy when you could just as easily have stayed at Windia with Candice?"
Jason's startled look was quickly replaced by one of anger and annoyance. "Okay, first of all I'd rather be out running from a pack of wild biruburu then be stuck with Candice for any extended period of time! Second of all, my business is not your business! You don't need to know why the hell I'm out here!" He glared at Janet defensively, stuck his hands into his pockets, resumed his lean against the fountain, and turned to look in the other direction, refusing to glance back at Janet.
"Geez, a little defensive aren't you?" Janet studied him suspiciously.
"You know, I made an attempt to try and get along with you a few nights ago around the campfire."
"Yea, and you botched it horribly." Janet grumbled to herself.
Lucy glanced back and forth between the two now silent windians, tsking quietly to herself. No, I really don't think they'll ever get along. She turned her attention back to Brandon.
"I suppose now could be a good time to look for places or information that might help us out a bit. Where should we start looking?"
Brandon shrugged, stretching his wings lightly. "Suppose it would be easier if some of us split up first of all." He gazed at Jason and Janet. "Although I suppose we could force those two to work together."
"I don't think that's a good idea..." Ray rubbed the back of his neck nervously. Brandon regarded him for a moment and shrugged again.
"It would force them to get along."
Lucy shook her head. "I agree with Ray. They wouldn't do anything except fight." She sighed to herself. "Well then, should we start our search? Where should we start anyway?"
"I suppose if you wanted to ask around for any suspicious looking people. You might hear something there. Or we could just check out a few places that would be most likely spots to search at night for the shens."
Lucy nodded. "Well then, shall we split up and start looking?"
"You know," Lucy sighed as she walked through the village with Brandon in tow, "when I said split up, I meant all of us."
"Like that's really going to happen."
"I can watch out for myself."
"I'm sure you can. But then, it's my job to not let you out of my sight when you're not at the palace."
Lucy folded her arms in front of her as she walked. "Like anything is really going to happen to me here? Anyway, where should we start looking?"
Brandon shrugged his wings in reply as he glanced around the village. "We're looking for places people wouldn't normally visit at night. Ask if they have a well?"
Lucy shook her head. "Full of water I'll bet, unless these people are having a drought, and I really doubt that right now." She hummed to herself while thinking. "Maybe at the church here."
"The church?" Brandon raised an eyebrow at her curiously. "Demons staying at a holy place?"
Lucy shrugged. "Well, it's believed in some cultures that holy places become places of haunting at night. It could make sense."
Brandon nodded in reply and the two windians continued on their search.
