Out of Darkness

"Is she alright?"
"She will be, just give her some time."
Janet groaned. She could just barely make out the voices around her. Her head was spinning, she was aching all over, and she could have sworn she was shaking. She tried to sit up but a feeling of nausea quickly made her change her mind.
"Don't move." That voice was Mrs. Anderson's. "Just lay here for now."
"I'm going to head out with the others and try and find Jason." That voice was Brandon's, and was followed by the sound of footsteps, and a door opening and closing. Janet groaned again and tried to open her eyes. A shushing noise was heard and she felt something wet put over her forehead as Mrs. Anderson began to speak again.
"Just rest now, dear." Doesn't sound like a bad idea. Janet began to feel herself slip into unconsciousness.

"You hurt the same elbow?" Brandon was helping Jason to his feet. The windian was still having trouble getting his legs to work right after his mad dash.
"Same fucking elbow he shot." Jason rubbed his sore elbow. It had taken most of the impact from when he hit the ground.
Brandon chuckled. "You made a pretty good decoy."
"That wasn't my intent." Jason grumbled and glared over at the guard. "If you hadn't taken away my only back-up I wouldn't have run."
"I needed her in the room." Brandon shrugged. "Besides, I've never seen you run that fast in my life."
"Come one, five of those creepy... ghost... thingies..." Jason shivered a bit as he thought about the concept, "against me? No way in hell I'm fighting them!"
"You don't seem to mind those odds when you're fighting other people back in Windia."
"Yea well, other people in Windia aren't ghosts." Jason began making his way with Brandon back towards the Anderson's house.
"Just think of it as an interactive ghost story." Brandon patted Jason on the shoulder. "One where you get to be a part of it."
"Yea well," Jason glared over at the windian as he stuffed his hands into his jacket -pockets. "Just between you and me, I never really liked ghost stories as a kid." His comment was met by a smirk. Jason rolled his eyes. "Look, anyway, where is everyone?"
"Janet's back at the house, Ray and Lucy went off the find the rest of the children."
Jason sighed. "Great... I just want to go back and get some sleep."
Brandon grinned again as he thought about his reply to the very same comment Janet had made. He didn't repeat it to Jason.

Lucy sighed and rubbed her arms as she made her way towards the orchid. "I think they'll be out here..."
Ray was in step just beside her. "Hope so. This night has been busy enough." He sighed. "Is it just me or has it felt like forever since we last saw morning?"
Lucy shrugged and continued walking, her eyes downcast. The two were making their way through the orchard trail in silence. Ray was fidgeting with his hands nerviously.
"Lucy, are you alright?"
"I don't know. I just keep thinking..."
"About...?"
Lucy sighed and stopped walking, turning to Ray. She had her arms crossed in front of her chest and she was rubbing them nerviously. "When I had gone upstairs I saw one of the shens..."
Ray nodded. "You told me. You said it talked to you."
Lucy sighed and nodded her head. Ray noticed her voice seemed a bit shaky. "One of the things it said... when it told me I couldn't win the battle, I don't know why, but I keep thinking about that."
Ray shrugged. "Why worry? It's dead now, so obviously it was wrong."
"It's not that." Lucy shook her head. "Something about what it said... it's like... it's like it was talking about something else, like something I would know about." Lucy sighed and shook her head again. "I don't know, but I felt like it had said that specifically to me for some reason..."
Ray watched her for a moment, not really sure what to say. He could tell she was troubled, but he didn't know what to do. He had the over whelming urge to just reach out and hold her, hug her and tell her it would be okay, but he didn't. He didn't feel like he could. Instead he managed out a quiet response. "We should go see if those kids are up there waiting for us."
Lucy nodded, almost a bit too eagerly, and started once more up the path through the orchid. The two finally made there way to the end of the path where it came out in the center of the orchard. Sure enough, the missing children were all there, crying, frightened, and confused. Lucy couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief as she glanced around at all of them. "They're here." She felt a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "They're all..." her words trailed off as she suddenly found her voice caught in her throat. Reflexively, Ray reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder. He could feel her shaking as he stared down at her.
"Lucy?"
She didn't respond. She couldn't if she had wanted to. She was too caught up in the startled realization of what the demon had meant in its saying.
