Out of Darkness

"Ah... there's our dragon now." Jason was leaning casually up against a tree as he watched Ray and his sister sitting at the large fountain in the front of the park. Britney was busy racing circles along the fountain's wide edge, occasionally jumping over her brother as he sat, reading a library book.
Lucy glanced over in their direction. She was sitting on a bench just beside Jason's tree, along with Janet, Justin and Candice. Brandon was there also, standing just behind the bench, right behind where Lucy was sitting. "He's got his sister with him... I think we should leave him alone."
Jason glanced down at Lucy in annoyance. "What's been up with you lately, Lucy? You used to be so into this, and suddenly you're just..." Jason shrugged, unable to think of a word to finish his sentence.
Candice sneered over at Lucy. "I think she's gone soft for the dragons."
Lucy just turned and glared back at her. "I just don't think it's right that we should be doing this while he has that child with him."
"Fine then, I'll get the kid out of here." Jason stood up from his spot against the tree and began walking up to the fountain where the two dragons were.
"Jason..." Janet started to sit up. "What the hell does he think he's doing?"

"... and then they defeated the evil dark dragon, and the hero kissed the princess, and they all lived happily ever after, and then they got married and had lots of kids and ..." Britney had been rambling on about a story her teacher had told them in class during story time. Ray, still rather engrossed in his book, was nodding and making a few noises of acknowledgement every so often. Suddenly, Britney's face popped down next to his and peered at the book in his hands.
"Whatcha reading?"
Ray glanced over at his sister. "History book. Basically, it's talking about the very same story you just told me, only in a more boring way and with less 'and's.'" He chuckled at Britney as she made a face.
"How boring," she said as she hopped off the fountain, glancing around the park for the next interesting task she might entertain herself with. With a squeal of excitement, she spotted a little red dragonfly and immediately began chasing after it.
"Don't run off too far, Brat!" Ray shouted as he glanced up, watching his sister. With a chuckle he went back to his book.

"Psst, hey!" Britney glanced up, looking for the owner of the voice she heard calling her. She spotted him, a red-headed man that looked familiar, but she wasn't sure where she had seen him before.
"Do I know you?" She asked as she approached him cautiously. "You look awful familiar."
Jason nodded casually as she strode up to the little dragon. "Of course you know me, I hang out with your brother sometimes." He stopped just a few paces in front of Britney and dropped down to meet her height. "Anyway, I was just thinking of you and your bro, and there's something I'd love to show you." With a quick jerk of his hand, he motioned for her to come with him. "Come on!"
Britney was about to follow when she paused and glanced back at the fountain. "Should I go get Ray? You said you was thinking about him too..."
Jason shook his head as he stood up. "I think you'll like this more then him," he said with a smirk and began leading her off.
Suddenly Britney paused. "Wait a minute, I know you!" She stared up at him with wide, alarmed eyes. "You're one of those people who keep picking on my brother!" Almost immediately she let out a high shout for her brother. Jason dove at the girl, clamping his hand tightly around her mouth, but it was too late.
"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SISTER!" Ray leapt off from his spot on the fountain, tossing his school book roughly onto the ground and raced over to where Jason and Britney were. Jason muttered as he stood up to meet Ray.
"She woulda been fine if the little pest was willing to cooperate."
Ray glared up at Jason, his hands balled into fists at his side. "What do you think you were doing with my sister?"
Jason smirked. "I was just going to take her for a little walk... nothing bad." Britney had placed herself behind Ray, hugging his leg and peering at Jason, eyes wide in fear and suspicion.
Ray just continued to glare angrily at Jason. "I'm warning you... stay away from my sister..."
"I don't want anything to do with your sister." Jason stepped up to Ray, closing the small gap between them as he gazed down at Ray, a look of suspicious mischief in his eyes. "But if you really don't want her to get hurt, I suggest you tell her to get out of here now..."
Britney sniffled lightly. "Ray... I wanna go home now."
"Hold on a second, Brit." Ray's eyes never wavered from Jason's. "I don't want any trouble, Jason."
"Trouble? This will be more fun then trouble." Jason paused and studied Ray for a second. "Or were you talking about for yourself?"
Ray was suddenly aware of Justin who had just stepped up next to Jason. He darted his eyes away, quickly searching the area, spotting the three girls and Brandon, and then returned his gaze back to the windian in front of him. Great, he thought. These guys never seem to travel alone... Ray reached down and tapped his sister lightly, motioning for her to get out of the way. If something happens... I don't want her in this...
Britney reluctantly began to take a few steps back, watching her brother in fear as she wondered what was about to happen. Ray raised his chin up a bit and gazed coolly at Jason.
"Alright... now what are you going to do?"
Ray's question was answered by Justin's fist as it hit his jaw hard. The force of the blow sent Ray staggering a few steps to the side. A second later and Jason and Justin were both busy, throwing punches and kicking at the helpless dragon. Britney shrieked loudly and buried her face in her hands, crying. Suddenly she felt a form behind her. With a startled cry, she turned quickly and glanced up to see Lucy standing over her, watching the scene before her with empty eyes. Her gazed drifted slowly down to the crying dragon at her feet, then back again and she began to stride towards the fighters.
"That's enough you two..." Her voice came out quiet and even, and about as emotionless as her eyes.
Jason glanced up at Lucy after delivering the dragon a quick blow to the stomach, causing him to double over. "What, and it's over already?"
Lucy motioned to Britney. "He's still got his sister here. She shouldn't have to see this." A look of disgust flashed into Lucy's eyes for a brief second as she glanced from Justin to Jason and back again. Then, without another word, she turned and walked back to the bench where the other three were waiting.
Jason glanced down at Ray for a second. "Stupid dragon..." With that, he and Justin stalked back to where the others were, and the group of Windians left the park, leaving behind them the wounded dragon and his crying sister.
