Life at Windian High

The office was quiet, save for the sound of Mr. Stewart's pen clicking. The Principal of Windian High had a bad habit of either tapping or clicking his pens whenever he was reading over documents or important papers. Mrs. Wireman sat across from him, waiting patiently as the windian before her scanned over the student files she had brought in to him. It was after school, and Mrs. Wireman had called a meeting between herself, Mr. Stewart, and one more member of the faculty about a certain student's participation in one of the school's extra curricular activities. Mr. Stewart slowly set down is pen and closed the student file in front of him, leaning forward in his chair to address the science teacher seated before him.

"Mrs. Wireman, it's almost five minutes past. I'm not sure if Mr. Briggs will make it here..." As if on cue, the door of the principal's office opened slowly, and in stepped a large armadillo clansmen, the boys PE teacher and one of the activity coordinators, Kurk Briggs. The bulky staff member glanced apologetically around the room before taking a seat beside Mrs. Wireman.

"Sorry I'm late." Briggs' gruff voice sounded rather quiet for a man of his size. "There was a mess with the equipment and it took a bit to clean up."

Mr. Stewart nodded and pushed the student file on his desk towards the PE teacher. "Mr. Briggs, I understand you have a one Mr. Jason Burnhart in your Archery club, is that correct?"

Mr. Briggs nodded as he glanced at the student file. "Yes sir, I do."

"And you are aware, Mr. Briggs," the windian clasped his hands and rested them on the desk in front of them, leaning forward a bit towards the teacher he has currently addressing. "you are aware that this school has a policy that it's students behavior and academic achievements must be kept in check for the students to participate in clubs?"

Mr. Briggs nodded again. "I am aware of this."

The principal reached over and flipped open the student file, turning it so that it faced the PE teacher right side up. He tapped the page lightly with his finger, under a column labeled 'Student Behavior.' "You are aware that this student has been in ISS seven times already this year, OSS twice, and has faced expulsion multiple times?"

Mr. Briggs began rubbing his hands together nervously in his lap. "I've heard a bit about it."

"School clubs like this are a privilege, Mr. Briggs. Something the student must earn his way into." Mrs. Wireman glared accusingly at the teacher next to her. "You do realize that Mr. Burnhart if failing most of his courses."

Mr. Briggs made a move to reply but was interrupted by Mr. Stewart's voice. "Mr. Briggs, how long have you had this student enrolled in your Archery club?"

Mr. Briggs scratched the back of his head as he thought. "Few years. Ever since he started coming to this school."

The principal pulled the student file back toward himself and scanned over it. "Why was he allowed to enroll in the first place?"

"The boy has talent, Mr. Stewart." The PE teacher leaned forward a bit. "He's one of the top archers we have."

"Mr. Briggs, our school policies have been the same for five years now. Frankly, I don't understand why this hasn't come to my attention sooner." Mr. Stewart sighed as he closed the file in front of him. "Burnhart does not belong in that club, and should not be allowed to continue to participate in it."

"Mr. Stewart," the burly instructor's hands flew up onto the desk as he jumped out of his seat. "Please listen, the boy has a natural talent for this-"

"Mr. Burnhart's natural talent," Mrs. Wireman glared sharply up at Mr. Briggs, "is to find any way possible to get into trouble."

"Sit down Mr. Briggs." Mr. Stewart sighed. "Mrs. Wireman is right. Mr. Burnhart does not belong in any activities until he can prove he's earned the privilege to be a part of them."

The armadillo man slowly took his seat. "But..."

"Either you do your job correctly, Mr. Briggs, or we find someone else who can do it correctly for you." Mr. Stewart handed the student file back to Mrs. Wireman. "That is all, you are both dismissed."

Mrs. Wireman stood from her seat, file in hand, and made her way out of the office. Mr. Briggs followed behind her slowly. The two walked down the hall together.

"Favoring a students talent is no excuse for being blinded to a students behavior, Mr. Briggs." Mrs. Wireman clutched the file to her chest as she made her way towards the staircase that would lead her back up to the second floor and to her homeroom. The large PE teacher lumbered behind her, his own destination being the gym located at the end of the hall. "You know he didn't belong in that club," the science teacher continued, "and it was only a little while until you would be forced to unenroll him."

Mr. Briggs barely let out an audible grumble in response before the two teachers passed the stairway and went there separate ways.
