Life at Windian High

The sound of piano notes caught Brandon's attention and his eyes drifted momentarily up to the stage where he caught sight of his sister seated in front of the piano on stage, her gaze trapped on the piano keys as she boredly plucked a few notes out. Brandon went back to his math work. He knew his sister well enough to know when he should just pretend to ignore her. The piano notes gradually began to form a tune. Brandon flipped to the back of his math book to check his work before going on to the next problem.

"I love the time and in between, the calm inside me, in the space where I can breathe... I believe there is a distance I have wandered to touch upon the years of reaching out and reaching in, holding out, holding in..."

His sister's quiet voice played at his ears as he worked on his math. Lucy had come to the auditorium to think, to have time to herself. As far as Brandon was concerned, it was none of his business as to what his sister was singing or why. It was none of his business, but he couldn't help but wonder anyway. Lucy's past was no secret to Brandon, just like it wasn't a secret to any of the Conwings. Everyone just ignored it though. It was nothing to talk about if it was the past.

"I believe this is heaven to no one else but me, and I'll defend it as long as I can be left here to linger in silence, if I chose to. Would you try to understand?"

Brandon was curious about his sister. He was curious as to what she thought about, or what she didn't think about, or what she tried not to think about. He was allowed a few glimpses into her mind during times like this, but he never pried to know anything else. He had too much respect for the woman on the stage to do that to her. If she ever wanted him to know, she would tell him.

"Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free, the mold that clings like desperation. mother can't you see I've got to live my life the way I feel is right for me... might not be right for you, but it's right for me...

"I believe this is heaven to no one else but me, and I'll defend it as long as I can be left here to linger in silence, if I chose to. Would you try to understand?"

Brandon closed his book and stood up, stretching his wings before turning to his sister. "Bell's about to ring."

Lucy stopped her playing and glanced at her brother, nodding slightly as she stood up. Brandon grabbed her back pack, as well as his, from off the seat they had been sitting on, and waited for his sister to close up the sound booth. The two windians made their way out of the auditorium as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch.
