Day of the Play

Author's Note: This part of the story ~and others like this part~ will be written slightly scriptish since it's basically a run through of the play, and when you write it like this it's hard not to make it like that. =^^=; Myah, anyway, I hope this turns out alright. Just sit back, read, and enjoy as the students of Windian High put on for you, the story of The Princess Bride.
Opening Scene:

The lights of the auditorium are out. There is a bit of shuffling in the darkness and soon the stage lights, (run by Kate) slowly fade on, spotting out a small scene that is being played out in front of the stage just before the seats. Diane is there, the part she's been casted as is that of a child and she does her best to act like one as she lays down, a thermometer in her mouth and a blanket over her.

Cynthia enters the spotlight, stepping up to Diane. She has been casted as the child's mother and she walks over to where Diane is lying, her tail waving slowly.

Cynthia -Mother-: Hi dear.

Diane -Kid-: *gazed up boredly at Cynthia as she muttered her response around the thermometer in her mouth* Hey mom.

Cynthia: *leans over Diane, taking her thermometer and checking it* You feeling any better?

Diane: *rubbing her forehead* A li'l bit.

Cynthia: *shaking the thermometer and putting it away, her tail waving* Guess what?

Diane: *her ears perk as she sits up and starts looking a little hopeful* Wha'?

Cynthia: *flashes her a toothy grin* Your Grandfather is here.

Diane: *groans and falls back into her lying position as she begins to plead* Mom, can't ya tell him I'm sick...

Cynthia: *chuckling* You're sick? That's why he's here.

Diane: *distressed* He'll pinch my cheeks....I hate that!

Cynthia: *shakes her head* Maybe he won't...

Alex enters, having casted himself as the kid's Grandfather and therefore narrator of the play. He steps up to where Diane and Cynthia are.

Alex -Grandfather-: *walking up to the two* Heyyyyy....How's the sick? Huh? * reaches down and pinching Diane's cheek. Diane turns and gives Cynthia a look of 'I told you so'*

Cynthia: *grinning* I think I'll leave you two pals alone. *exits from the scene*

Alex: *turning to Diane* I brought you a special present. *pulls out a package and hands it to Diane*

Diane: *excitedly* What is it?

Alex: Open it up.

Diane: *opening the package* A book? *ear droop lightly*

Alex: *nodding* That's right, when I was your age, entertainment was in books; And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick and I used to read it to your father...and today, I'm gonna read it to you.

Diane: *less interested* Does it got any sports in it?

Alex: *chuckles* Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.

Diane: It doesn't sound too bad. *yawns* I'll try and stay awake.

Alex: Oh, well, thank you very much. That's very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming. *rolls his eyes* Oh..alright..The Princess Bride by S.Morganstern, Chapter 1. *opens the book*

The light fades from the scene in front of the stage and the curtains to the stage now open, pulling apart to reveal the stage having been set up to resembled the insides of a shabby farm house. Lucy, having been casted as the farm girl Buttercup, is moving about in the house. Eventually she is joined by Brandon who has been casted as the farmhand Westley. Alex can be heard narrating from off stage, his voice joined in every so often by Diane but the two are no longer able to be seen.

Alex: Buttercup was raised on a small farm in the country of Florin. Her favorite past-times were riding her horse and tormenting the farm boy that worked there. His name was Westley. But she never called him that. Isn't that a wonderful beginning?

Diane: *with no enthusiasm* Yeah..it's really good.

Alex: Nothing gave Buttercup as much pleasure as ordering Westley around.

Lucy -Buttercup-: Farmboy, varnish my horse's saddle. I want to see my face shining in it by morning.

Brandon -Westly-: As you Wish.

Alex: 'As you wish' was all he ever said to her.

Lucy: *holding two empty pails* Farmboy, fill these with water *pauses for a moment as Brandon approaches her to take the pails and looks into his eyes* please?

Brandon: As you wish.

Alex: That day she was amazed to discover that when he was saying 'as you wish,' what he meant was, 'I love you.' And even more amazing was the day she realized she truly loved him back.

Lucy: Farmboy *turning to Brandon and then scanning around the scene for something to order him for* fetch me that pitcher. *points to a pitcher hanging over the stove*

Brandon: *taking the pitcher and whispering* As you wish....

Diane: *interrupting the story and the light clicks off from the stage, reappearing at where Alex and Diane are sitting* Hold it! Hold it! What is this? Are you trying to trick me? Where's the sports? *pauses and gives Alex a disheartened look* Is this a kissing book?

Alex: Wait, just wait.

Diane: *growing impatient* Well when does it get good?

Alex: Keep your shirt on and let me read. *light fades off from the two worens and goes back to the stage. The scene on the stage has now changed to that outside of the house, and a backdrop shows a green field.*

Alex: Westley had no money for marriage so he packed his few belongings and left the farm to seek his fortune across the sea. It was a very emotional time for Buttercup.

Diane: *groaning* I don't believe this!

Lucy: *tears sliding down her cheeks as she cries quietly* I'm afraid I'll never see you again...

Brandon: Of course you will.

Lucy: But what if something happens to you?

Brandon: *solemnly* Hear this now, I will always come for you.

Lucy: But how can you be sure?

Brandon: This is true love. You think this happens every day? *they embrace and he leaves*

Alex: Westley didn't reach his destination. His ship was attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who never left captives alive. When Buttercup got the news that Westley was murdered...

Diane: *interrupting* Murdered by pirates is good!

Alex: *continuing* She went into her room and shut the door, and for days she neither slept nor ate.

Lucy: *speaking quietly* I will never love again. *the lights fade out*
