Day of the Play

Scene 12

The lights return to the scene of Jason sitting in his quarters, sharpening a dagger. Chris arrives.

Jason: Rise and report!

Chris: The Thieves' Forest is emptied. Thirty men guard the castle gate.

Jason: Double it! My princess must be safe.

Chris: The gate has but one key, and I carry that.

Lucy arrives.

Jason: Ah, my dulcet darling! Tonight, we marry. *turns to Chris* Tomorrow morning your men will escort us to Florin Channel, where every ship in my armada waits to accompany us on our honeymoon.

Lucy: *disturbed* Every ship but your four fastest, you mean. *Jason looks confused*. Every ship but the four you sent.

Jason: *recovering badly* Yes. Yes of course. Naturally not those four.

Chris: *feeling tension, he exits* Your majesty.

Lucy: *watching Chris go before she turns back to Jason* You never sent the ships. Don't bother lying. Doesn't matter, Westley will come for me anyway.

Jason: *muttering* You're a silly girl.

Lucy: Yes I am a silly girl, for not having seen sooner that you were nothing but a coward with a heart full of fear.

Jason: *outraged* I would not say such things if I were you.

Lucy: Why not? You can't hurt me. Westley and I are joined by the bonds of love, and you cannot track that; not with a thousand bloodhounds. And you cannot break it, not with a thousand swords. And when I say you're a coward, it is only because you are the slimiest weakling ever to crawl on this world!

Jason: *furious* I would not say such things if I were you!!! *He forcefully escorts Lucy from the room*

The stage goes black and as the lights come back on they reveal the inside of the Pit of Despair. Brandon is still strapped to the machine, Nate is at his desk still taking notes, and Jason has just come charging into the pit, stalking over to Brandon.

Jason: *To Brandon* You truly love each other, and so you might have been truly happy. Not one couple in a century has that chance, no matter what the storybooks say. And so I think no man in a century will suffer as greatly as you will. *Jason sets the machine to the maximum of 50.*

Nate: *screaming* Not to fifty!!

Brandon screams in pain and the stage goes black, the noise of the windian's scream continues on in the darkness, slowly fading. When the lights of the stage come back on they reveal Frank and David on stage, the scene appears to be that of the village. All of the actors except for Frank, David, Lucy, Brandon, Alex and Diane have been casted as extras for the crowd in this scene. Frank and David look up as they hear the sound of Brandon's scream in the background before if fades out.

Frank: Fezzik! Fezzik! Listen. Do you hear? That is the sound of ultimate suffering. My heart made that sound when Rugen slaughtered my father. The man in black makes it now.

David: The man in black?

Frank: His true love is marrying another tonight. So who else is the cause for ultimate suffering. *Frank and David push their way through the crowd on stage* Excuse me. Pardon me, it's important. *They struggle to move even a few feet* Fezzik, please?

David: *in a bellowing voice* EVERYBODY, MOVE!!!

Frank: Thank You. *The whole crowd clears out, leaving a perfect path for the two.*

The stage goes black again. As the lights come back on it scene reveals to be the tree grove outside the Pit of Dispair. Frank and David enter the tree grove where they find the Alex, as the albino, working a wheel-barrow.

Frank: *to the Alex* Where is the man in black? You get there from this grove, yes? *No response* Fezzik, jog his memory.

David hits the Alex on the top of his head, who falls over from the blow.

David: I'm sorry Inigo. I didn't mean to jog him so hard. Inigo?

Frank, not giving up, kneels on one leg, holding his sword high. He speaks:

Frank: Father, I have failed you for twenty years. Now our misery can end. Somewhere, somewhere close by is a man who can help us. I can not find him alone. I need you. I need you to guide my sword, please. Guide my sword.

Frank stands, eyes closed, and follows his sword. It sticks into a nearby tree. Frank thinks he has failed. He leans against the tree, and the secret entrance is revealed. David and Frank enter the Pit of Despair. The stage goes black for a moment, and when the lights come back on Frank and David are in the Pit of Despair. The only person they find in there is Brandon laying on the table.

David: *putting his ear to Brandon's chest* He's dead.

Frank: *shaking his head in disbelief* This is no fair.

The stage goes black and the lights turn to where Alex and Diane are sitting together.

Diane: *upset* Grandpa! Grandpa! Wait, wait. What did Fezzik mean, 'He's Dead.'? I mean, he didn't mean 'dead'?? Westley is only faking, right?

Alex: Do you want me to read this or not?

Diane: *demanding* Who gets Humperdinck!

Alex: *raising his eyebrows in wonder* I don't understand?

Diane: *annoyed* Who kills Prince Humperdinck? At the end, someone's got to do it! Is it Inigo? Who?!

Alex: *shaking his head* Nobody. Nobody kills him. He lives.

Diane: *bewildered* You mean he wins? Landon, Grandpa! What did you read me this thing for?

Alex: You know, you...you've been very sick and you're taking this story very seriously. I think we'd better stop now. *closing the book*

Diane: *apologetic* No. I...I'm okay. I'm okay. Sit down. I'm alright.

Alex: *sighing* Okay. Alright, *opening the book again* now lets see...where were we? Oh, yes, in the Pit of Despair.

The lights turn back to the stage where Frank, David and Brandon are still in the Pit of Despair.

Frank: The Montoya's have never taken defeat easily. Come Fezzik, bring the body.

David: The body?

Frank: Have you any money?

David: I have a little.

Frank: I just hope it's enough to buy a miracle, that's all.
