Chapter 17

As Frank was walking down the staircase, he heard the soft click of the upstairs door closing behind Tellka.

Frank took a deep breath. "This is it... now or never... I mean, I did help Alex back in Lunarvale, but this is the first time that I've had people following my decisions..." Frank stopped to listen to his surroundings.

In the distance, he could hear the hissing of various demons that were in the colliseum. Frank slowly started moving down the stairs, and heard the clicking of both Kate and Tellka's claws on the steps.

Frank stopped once again at the bottom of the staircase, and examined the busted door. He then strained his ears, as if he heard something unusual coming from nearby.

"Do... Do.... you hear that????" Kate asked Frank in a scared tone.

"I thought that I was only hearing things... You heard that too?" Frank asked quietly. He turned around and looked at Kate. Kate was starting to tremble, and the fur on her body was on end.

"I'm hearing it too... It's coming from out there." Tellka said cautiously.

Frank moved toward Kate to try and comfort her. "Don't worry Kate... I won't let anything happen to you." He said quietly.

Kate looked into his eyes for a moment, then calmed down before nodding slowly. Frank could have sworn that he heard Tellka grumble, but he tossed that feeling aside as a figment of his imagination.

"Wait here... I'll go check it out. I'll be right back." Frank said as he unsheathed his rapier. As he did so, he heard a groan come from nearby.

"There it is again..." Tellka grumbled.

"Frank... Be careful... please..." Kate said in a caring tone.

"You better do as she says, Frank. Or I'll smack ya." Persona Chuan told him in his mind.

Frank looked at Kate and smiled. He then looked at Tellka, and noticed that she was not a happy camper. Frank looked at her for a moment, then shrugged.

"I'll be back... " He said as he exited the ruined doorway.

Frank slowly rounded the corner and found someone injured, and possibly dying. From what he could tell, it was a female from the Angel clan, and from what she was wearing, she had to be a guard of some sort.

"Oh man....." Frank said loudly. He then rushed over to the guard, who abruptly pulled a crossbow up when he approached.

"Who are you..." The guard asked weakly, without lowering her crossbow from Frank's form.

Frank stopped as soon as he saw the crossbow pointed at him. "Wait... I'm not a demon... My name's Frank..." he explained carefully.

The guard lowered her crossbow, and sighed. "Thank Ladon... I thought that I would never see another living person here..."

Frank sheathed his rapier, and knelt down beside the guard. He noticed large golden wings protruding from her back, and a large wound on one leg.

"Who are you, and what happened?" Frank asked gently.

"My name is Maria... and I'm with the Windian Guard... I came here looking for a girl... Have you seen her? Her name is Kate, and she is...

"Kate??? Yeah... She's with me. She was here before all of this happened... Tell me, have you heard of a noble by the name of Nathaniel Redwing???" Frank explained and asked.

Maria thought for a moment before answering. "Why yes... I have. We've been trying to find evidence to use against him. We were suspecting him of poaching furs."

Frank looked around for a moment to make sure that nothing was going to attack them. What surprised him was that Kate and Tellka had followed him out of the stairwell.

Frank looked at them for a moment before Kate spoke up.

"We were worried about you, Frank. So Tellka decided that we should follow you..." Kate then saw the injured guard and gasped.

"Are you Kate???" Maria asked. Kate nodded.

"Ms. Harlow is worried about you. I wish I could get out of here and help you three... but I've got a problem of my own. Frank... can you tell me what happened??? Why are there demons all over the colliseum?" Maria explained before wincing in pain.

"Frank, she's in pain... you might want to help her..." Katt explained in his mind.

"I was going to Katt... I'm not gonna leave her like this." Frank replied.

"But you don't have access to your healing spells... How are you going to help her?" Katt asked.

"I have my ways..." He replied in his mind.

Frank reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small red orb. Kate, Tellka, and Maria looked at it strangely.

"What is that?" Tellka asked.

"It's a Bloodorb. I bought these medicines back home... Since all of these things had happened, the healing powers of conventional medicines has been enhanced." Frank explained. Kate gave him a look of confusion, while Tellka absorbed what he had just said.

"So... What are you going to do with it?" Maria asked hopefully.

"I'm going to use it to heal you. The only drawback is that you are going to be extremely tired after I use it. Don't worry we'll move you to a safe place.

"Wait... before you use that... could you explain what is going on here???" Maria asked hopefully.

"Redwing... is the cause of all this..." Kate started to explain. "He must have summoned all these things... and he tried to kill me... like he did..." Kate stopped talking before she started to cry. It didn't work, though, and she did start crying. Frank walked over to Kate and hugged her.

"Kate... please... you don't have to talk about it..." Frank said in a soothing tone. Kate looked at Frank, and just continued to sob silently.

"Are you ok?" Tellka asked Kate.

Kate turned her head and looked at Tellka. She managed a slight nod, which Tellka returned. Maria spoke up.

"I'm... sorry Kate... for what must have happened. What are you three going to do?"

Frank looked at Kate, who was still quietly sobbing, then at Maria.

"He's gone too far. He's a demon, disguised as an Angel... The glowing eyes proved it. We're going to stop him and return this place to normal, even if it means killing him." Frank said seriously. Kate stopped crying and looked at Frank.

"You've got my consent. He always treated us without respect. Now I know why..." Maria said weakly. She then reached into her armor, and pulled out some sort of identification.

"Listen... I know that you three are going to fight him... And I truly believe that you can stop him... When you get out of here... Give this to the other guard waiting outside. Tell him where I am, and that I'm ok." Maria explained.

Frank nodded, and slowly seperated from Kate. He retrieved the ID from Maria, and pocketed it. He then came close with the bloodorb in hand.

"This will be quick, and then we'll take you to the armory. You'll be relatively safe there." Frank explained.

Frank touched the Bloodorb to Maria's head, and some white medicine oozed out. Suddenly, she was surrounded by a golden glow which healed her leg completely. However, it left her completely weak.

"Thank..... you......" Maria said before falling asleep.

"Tellka? Can you help me carry her to the armory?" Frank asked.

"Sure... I guess I could..." Tellka answered. Frank looked at Tellka again, before moving to Maria. He lifted her by her arms, while Tellka grabbed her legs.

Both of them carried Maria to the armory, while Kate followed slowly. They laid her down on the cot, and then left again, locking the door behind them with a key Kate had found.

Frank looked at Kate and Tellka again, before speaking.

"All right.... It's now or never... We'd better be careful..." Frank started.

"Frank????" Kate asked.

"Yeah, Kate?" He answered.

"....... nevermind..... It wasn't important..." She answered quietly.

Frank looked at Kate once more, and saw the emotions in her eyes... It was abvious that she was wondering why Frank was always going out of his way to help people.

Frank slowly moved down the stairs again, with his party behind him. What he couldn't see was the smile that was on Kate's face, because of what he just did for yet another stranger.
