Kate's story chapter four

"Once again," I muttered, "I have chosen the wrong seat..." I hated it.. I couldn't see, I couldn't hear, atleast, I think I couldn't hear. The crowd quieted as the announcer began.

"On this side,"

I grinded my teeth together and threw my hands over my ears. Yup, now I really couldn't hear anything, save for the ringing in my ears. I kept my hands over them and tried to make out the muffled words of the announcer. He was announcing Tellka's opponent, a lizard clan man, wielding a nasty looking spear as a weapon. I think his name was Dravon. Then the announcer introduced Tellka and the crowd erupted into a roar of boos and hisses.

Makes sense, I thought, Some no name Woren is gonna come and fight in this arena.. who do you think would really bet on her? I sighed. Well, best of luck to you anyway, Tellka.

I saw her glance up at me as if I had actually spoken the words. I knew she heard me. I sat back as the fight started.

I couldn't really see what was going on. Not that it mattered. Just about every one in the crowd seemed to be acting like the winner of this match had already been decided. I wondered if anybody had actually bet on Tellka. The noise below drug on for what seemed like hours, although I knew it had only been a few minutes. I couldn't see anything, couldn't hear anything.. "Oh Tellka, how are you doing down there?" I whispered quietly to myself and slumped down in my seat.

Suddenly, I heard a shout from someone in the audience, "She has him pinned!" and the crowd went dead silent. I jumped out of my seat to see what had happened. Sure enough, there was Tellka, her opponent pinned under her, his weapon lying a few feet away in the sand. Tellka held her clawed staff up in a threatening position above her head, the menacing pose promised the battles end as the announcer called Tellka out as the winner. She stepped away from the lizard man, bowed respectfully and turned to leave the ring. The only sound I heard from the crowd was a single "whoop" from the only man among the viewers who had bet apon the winning Woren. I slid out from my seat and vanished out the door to the catch Tellka in her room.

I left the coloseum and headed home. "I didn't know you could still fight like that.."

"What do you think I spend my time doing?"

I shrugged. "Never thought about it.. " I stepped up to the house and entered. Pagan came up and greeted me with a happy ~mewr~. I picked up the little kitten and pet it lightly. "So, do you think your going to keep fighting?"

"Who are you talking to, Kate?" Carrie entered the room and glanced around for the visitor I had brought.

"No one." I answered quietly and set down Pagan. Carrie came up and gave me a little hug.

"Where have you been? It's well past noon and you left early this morning."

I shrugged, "I've just been out looking around for things to do."

Carrie smiled and turned to head back to the kitchen, calling over her shoulder, "If you needed something to do, you could have just asked me. I'm sure I could think of plenty of things.."

"Not that kind of stuff." I laughed. "You know what I mean." And I followed her into the kitchen, expecting her to hand me a few things to lay out on the table. Needless to say, I wasn't dissapionted.

"If you really need a place to go," Carrie appeared from out of the kitchen carrying a plate full of warm smelling rolls, "There is a park around here you might enjoy." She set the plate down in the center of the table and glanced around. "It's such a pretty little place, I'm sure you would enjoy it there." She smiled warmly.

"I'll look for it after lunch." I seated myself at the table as Carrie brought in a small late of little sandwitches, cheese and crackers. I looked at the food. "You always do so much.."

"I just enjoy cooking, it's a gift for me." Carrie sat down and passed me the plate of rolls. "Now eat, you look hungry."

********************************************************************

The rest of the day wasn't all that eventfull. I helped Carrie with some of the chores around the house, never did go look for that park. After I had finished helping, I dissapeared upstairs into my room and plopped down on the bed.

"I might, I haven't really thought about it."

"Huh?" I glanced up as I heard Tellka again.

"You asked if I was going to continue fighting."

"Oh, that. Well I mean, sure your good at it but.. You? Fighting? Don't you have to be living to really consider spending your time doing something like that?"

Tellka appeared beside me. "I don't count?" She gave a little innocent look. I chuckled.

"No, you don't. Why would you want to spend your time doing a thing like that? Fighting, I mean."

"Because, like I have said before. It's an easy way to get money."

"Wha-" I began, but a knock on the door stopped me. I stepped out of my room and went to answer the door. A large manillo man was standing there holding a sack of money in his hands.

"Excuse me," he began, "But I'm looking for a girl named Kate. I believe she lives here."

"I'm Kate." I nodded slightly. "What is it?"

The man handed me the sack. "You forgot to pick this up before you left." And he turned and walked away. I stared at the sack of money for a moment and went back upstairs. I heard Carrie call behind me.

"Who was at the door?"

"No one important." I called back and closed the door to my room behind me. I glanced up from the sack of coins in my hand to Tellka who was sitting on my bed, a slight grin on her face.

"As I was saying." She stated matter-o-factly.
