Chapter 24

I felt extremely drained after using the last of my power to heal me and Kate... I could have fallen asleep right then and there... If I wanted to.

I couldn't even hear clearly..... I needed to rest... badly...

"way-" I heard Kate's voice. "-ank nee- to stay, seeing how- you think he- stay the night here?"

Huh? What'd she say? I can't even...

Persona Chuan: She's asking if you could stay the night. You must be out of it...

I am Katt... I need to sleep...

I didn't even catch Carrie's response. The next thing I saw was Kate rushing down with blankets, after Carrie prepared the couch.

"-self at home. -at peace. Kate- Bed." Was all I caught from Carrie. I tried to smile... But couldn't. I was that tired. I slowly watched as Kate and Carrie walked upstairs. I'd better thank her in the morning.

I noticed that Kate still had my jacket. Good... One less thing to remove. I took off what I could, such as socks, shoes, weaponry... And slept. Hard... I thought I'd have nightmares, but thankfully, I didn't dream that night.

********************************************************

Despite the fact that I had slept like a brick, I was up early. Force of habit, I guess... But today was different. I wasn't going to school. In fact, I made a decision. But first things first. I stretched, and noticed that Carrie must have gotten up too. My clothes were off me and folded. They were clean. Another thing to thank her for.

I noticed I was in some sort of sweat suit. Where did this come from? I shrugged, put on my shoes, and grabbed my rapier. It was time for some much needed practice.

Carrie was there in the kitchen. "Good morning Frank."

"Good morning, Ms. Harlow. Thank you for letting me stay here." It was time I got my thanks out.

"It was nothing... but Frank... tell me. How long have you known about Tellka?"

My eyebrows shot up.

How... how did she find out? I didn't say anything... and God knows Kate didn't.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you. It was just that I promised Kate... that I wouldn't tell. I found out about her when we reached the colliseum armory."

Carrie shook her head lightly. "It's okay... You didn't break your promise to Kate, and that's good." She then looked me over, and then saw the rapier.

"Where are you going???"

"If you don't mind, I wanted to practice. I missed my practice at school yesterday, with all that happened."

"What happened, besides...."

"Ms. Harlow.... It's a long story. One I wouldn't like to recall... I'm sorry. Maybe Kate can tell you. I told her of what happened to my home..." I looked down and shook my head.

"All right Frank. Now go and practice. I'll call you when breakfast is ready." She turned back to her cooking, and I went out the back door, and into the backyard.

First, some simple stretches, to loosen up.... Then go into a full exercise, till breakfast is ready.

Stretching exercises are easy... and necessary to prevent injury. After a full warm-up, I grabbed my rapier and began a series of thrusts, parries, and slices, against thin air of course.

I heard a noise as I practiced. I looked in the direction of it, and saw Kate peeking at me through her window. She then went back inside her room.

"Frank!" I turned and saw Carrie. "Breakfast is nearly done. Why don't you go upstairs and clean up? I'm sure you need it."

I nodded, then sheathed my rapier. I ran inside, and grabbed my clothes, and headed upstairs. I didn't see Kate anywhere, so I went ahead and cleaned up, and changed back to my uniform, minus the jacket.

I went downstairs, feeling much better. I saw Kate and Carrie seated, so I joined them.

"Frank... I forgot to give this to you last night." Kate said. I looked, and there she was, holding my jacket. I smiled, and she handed it to me.

"Thanks. I've got my other things in there... medicines, a photo..." Kate just smiled at me.

"Come on you two. Nothing like a good breakfast to start the day!" Carrie said cheerfully. I smiled, and Kate and I began to eat. Afterward, Both of us helped Carrie with the dishes.

I've gotta tell Kate... now... Can't hold it back any longer....

I had a troubled look on my face. I really was confused. What was I gonna do in Windia? Why am I here??? How can I figure this out???

"Kate..." I said quietly. She just looked at me. "I... I have to leave today... I'm sorry..."

"What? Why???" Kate asked.

"I have a lot of questions to answer... Like... Why am I here? Why was I sent to Windia? I didn't say this earlier... but... I wasn't really sent here." Kate and Carrie both shot me curious looks.

"I was sent to the void in between time and space. I should be there still. But... A young angel.. about your age... with blue wings... she brought me to this world." I explained.

"But Frank..."

"Kate... I'll be ok. Don't worry. I just want to figure out all these things."

"Frank... I might be able to help." Carrie said quietly. I looked at her, and folded my arms, like I usually do when I think.

"How so?" I asked Carrie.

"I've heard of a relic... When I was younger... It's a diamond... called the diamond of truth." She said quietly.

"Diamond???" I asked.

"Yes... It reveals truths to you. It may be of some help." She said quietly.

"I see... I'd better look then... Do you..." Carrie cut me off.

"The last I heard, it was in a dungeon in Agua. The floating island above Windia."

"Thanks... Thank you Carrie. It will help me." I smiled. Then there was a knock at the door. Kate answered, and it was Maria, the guard we saved.

"Frank? Kate?" I went to Kate's side as Maria talked.

"The city wants to thank you, for ending the case that we've been working on for months, for saving my life, and for ending the reign of a dangerous poacher. Where's the third person who was with you???"

She must mean Tellka...

"Oh... Tellka.... She's upstairs, still sleeping." Kate said quietly, making a shushing sound.

"I see... Well, the city has issued you three an amout of money, as a reward. Frank, Kate... " She gave me a bag, and gave two to Kate.

"Give one of those to Tellka when she's awake. The city, along with the guard, has agreed to pay you each 10,000 Zenny for services and a job well done." Kate's eyes raised slighly. How much was considered a lot of money in Windia???

"Again thank you." Maria bowed, and left before we said anything. I turned to Kate.

"How much is considered, a lot of money in Windia???"

Kate cocked a head to one side. "I'd tell you, but you'd probably faint." Kate smiled slightly.

Carrie came out with a pack, and gave it to me.

"Carrie???"

"You might need this. You don't have that much room to store things." She said with a smile.

"Again, thank you. Thank you both, from the bottom of my heart." I smiled, as I put my money in with my things. I noticed some food, and some clothing. Where'd she get the clothes from???

I shouldered my pack, then looked at Kate.

"It's time. I'd better get going..."

"Frank... Thanks. Thank you for all you've done. Please don't..."

"I won't Kate. I'll visit if I'm in the neighborhood. Ok? Here..." I pulled my school ID from my wallet, and handed it to her, photo side up.

"Don't forget me. Kate, you're important to me. I won't forget you. I promise." I kissed her cheek lightly, and headed to the door.

"Be careful Frank!" Kate yelled as I walked out, with my weapons now in their places on me.

I turned back and waved. I knew I'd be back... Maybe later on... But first things first. I needed my answers... And I needed them desperately.
