Chapter 9

The trio left the room, with Tellka leading, followed by Kate, and with Frank bringing up the rear.

All around them it was quiet... too quiet. The only sounds that could be heard were the soft echos of Frank's shoes, the clicking of both Kate's and Tellka's claws on the ground, and the occasional hissing of either a demon or a monster trying to find them.

Frank closed the door behind him. Tellka looked over at both Kate and Frank and motioned for them to follow.

Kate gave a shaky nod, whereas Frank only nodded in understanding. Both of them then followed Tellka.

Frank glanced at Kate and noticed that she had an extremely tight grip on the rapier. She turned to look at Frank, and he noticed that her face was quite pale. She also had a look of nervousness and fear on it as well. Kate then spoke to Frank.

"Frank... can I talk to you?" She said quietly, with a hint of fear in her voice.

Frank looked at Kate and noticed that her tail was twitching back and forth, like a metronome. He nodded, and then quickened his pace to join Kate at her side.

"What's on your mind?" Frank asked.

Kate noticed that Tellka stole a glance at both of them before turning her attention to what was in front of them. She then turned back to Frank.

"Nothing, really... I just need someone to talk to, besides Tellka." she responded.

"All right, Kate. I'm here for you. What do you feel like talking about?" Frank asked quietly. This time he noticed that Tellka stole a glance at both of them.

"Well... I'm wondering how you do this all the time... Is it always like this back in your home?" she asked.

"Hardly. Back in Lunarvale, there were no things as magic, or demons, until today. In fact, there was one intelligent race, unlike here."

"What? There are no Angels? No Woren?" She asked quizically.

"Nope. Only humans." Frank responded.

"I see..." she responded. "I still want to know... why are you helping us? You didn't even know Tellka or me until today."

Frank shrugged. "It's something that I felt I had to do. I wouldn't let a person who was like that kill someone for a reason like that."

Kate looked at him in wonderment. "I never knew that there were people like you, Frank." Kate noticed that Tellka looked at them once again.

"Huh? What's that supposed to mean?" Frank asked in a confused tone.

Kate smiled. "I mean that I didn't think that there were people who would be willing to go out on a limb for others, and not want something in return."

"I'm like that. Some of my friends tell me that I can be a little too nice for my own good." he replied. Frank then gave a little lopsided grin.

"Well, I'm glad that you're here, Frank." Kate told him. She too smiled back. Both Frank and Kate noticed Tellka looking at them again.

"Why does she keep looking at us?" Frank asked Kate.

"I really don't know..." Kate responded with a look of innocence.

"Kate, can I tell you something?" Frank said quietly.

Kate just looked at Frank with a puzzled look. Frank noticed that most of the color had returned to her face.

"You know Kate..." Frank paused and looked at the ground for a second. "I think that you're really nice. I also think that you're cute." He said quietly.

Kate was speechless, and actually stopped walking for a second. Tellka turned to look at them, and had a grin on her face. That grin then turned to a look of horror.

"LOOK OUT!!! BEHIND YOU!!!" Tellka yelled.

Frank and Kate whirled around, and noticed two demons trying to sneak up on them. Kate reared back in fear, while Frank raised his fists.

Tellka tried to rush over and help them, but she had a problem of her own: a demon had dropped from the ceiling, and was in between her and Kate and Frank. Tellka swore and readied her staff for battle.

The two demons approached Frank and Kate slowly. Frank noticed that they were ones that he had not seen in Lunarvale. They were dark red, had on loin cloths, and had dripping fangs and bright yellow eyes.

Frank charged one and delivered a right cross and an uppercut. Kate approached the other slowly and swung the rapier wildly, since she didn't have a clue on how to use a rapier.

Frank didn't do much damage to the demon. Kate managed to deliver a small cut to the one she was fighting, before it counterattacked. Kate was lucky enough to get away. Both she and Frank regrouped.

"Get behind me, Kate." Frank said as he unslung his shotgun.

Kate nodded, and was behind Frank in an instant. The demons were still approaching them as Frank brought the shotgun down to hip level.

"Try it..." Frank said in a deadly tone. He then squeezed the trigger of the shotgun. The resulting blast caused Kate to cover up her ears. However, she was able to hear the demons roar in pain.

Kate was in shock that Frank managed to hit both of them. What was even more surprising, was that the two demons were still alive.

Frank quickly pumped his shotgun, and the spent shell flew out of the gun and bounced around on the floor. Frank looked over at Kate once again.

"Frank, use you magic! That thing... Persona!!!" Kate said hysterically.

Frank nodded, and turned to face the demons. He then brought the shotgun up, and leaned it against his shoulder.

"GET 'EM!!!!" Frank yelled. Instantly, a blue circle appeared under him, and Frank was surrounded by a column of blue light. A beam of light shot out of him, and enveloped into a majestic red dragon that hovered over his body. The dragon reared it head back, and shot very real flames out of it's mouth at the two unfortunate demons. The dragon then faded, along with the circle and the column.

Needless to say, both demons were fried to a crisp. Kate had a look of amazement on her face, and didn't notice that Tellka had rejoined them.

Frank noticed as he slung the shotgun on his back. He looked at Tellka, and breathed a sigh of relief that she did not get hurt.

"Are both of you okay?" She asked quickly.

"We are, Tellka." Kate responded.

"All right then. Let's keep on going. I think we're almost there." She said. She winked at Frank, but Frank decided not to ask about that.

As Kate and Frank started to follow, Kate turned to Frank once more.

"I'm still not used to that..." She said quietly.

"Neither am I..." Frank responded. "Neither am I." Kate just looked at him again in wonderment.
